The Power Of lived Experience
Evidence-Based Support That Helps People Stay Connected to Recovery
Peer support brings something unique to the recovery process: lived experience. Peer support specialists understand many of the challenges associated with substance use and recovery because they have personally navigated similar experiences. That shared understanding can help build trust, reduce isolation, provide encouragement, and give individuals a practical example of what long-term recovery can look like.
Research increasingly supports the value of peer recovery services. A recent systematic review examining 28 studies involving more than 12,600 participants found that peer recovery support services can improve engagement with substance-use treatment and retention in treatment. Researchers concluded that peer services can play an important role in helping individuals enter care and remain connected to the recovery process.
Earlier research has also associated peer recovery support with positive outcomes such as improved relationships with treatment providers and social supports, greater treatment satisfaction, increased retention, and in some studies reductions in substance use or relapse. Researchers also emphasize that peer support is not a replacement for professional treatment when treatment is needed; rather, it can provide an important layer of ongoing recovery support that complements clinical and community-based services.
At our McCalla Peer Support office, the goal is simple: meet people where they are, help them stay connected, and provide practical support as they build a sustainable life in recovery.
